Caring for cats as pets is a great responsibility and being aware of their nutritional needs is paramount. Thankfully, there are a few simple tips which can help:
Portions
If food has been left out for a day, throw it away and give fresh food with each meal. If it seems as though too much food is being thrown away then the portions being given are probably too large. Additionally, if a cat is becoming overweight, it is better to reduce the size of the portions rather than start skipping meals.
Dog food
If there are both cats and dogs within the same household, it is important to be aware that cats need a diet that is much higher in protein than dogs. Therefore it is vital that cats are not given the opportunity to have access to dog food as eating it can often be detrimental to their health.
Routine
Try to feed a cat at the same time every day. Cats are creatures of habit and feeding them at regular times gives them a routine which they can stick to.
Hygiene
Use only hot water when cleaning a cat’s feeding bowl. Detergents or cleaning agents are not recommended as they can affect a cat’s health if not properly rinsed.
